Setting up your sequence in Kit
This guide is for people who already use Kit. If you're starting from scratch, we suggest Systeme.io. Read "Before you start" first, to check your Kit plan can run a sequence.
Kit (formerly ConvertKit) sends a series of emails with an Email Sequence, and starts it when someone signs up using a Visual Automation. This guide covers both. Every step comes from Kit's own help pages, linked at the end of each section. If a screen looks different, the linked page will be the most up to date.
Checked against Kit's help pages on 1 October 2026.
Before you start: which plan you need
Kit's free plan covers up to 10,000 subscribers, with unlimited landing pages, forms and email broadcasts. Whether the free plan includes what you need here is unclear:
- Kit's help page on the free (Newsletter) plan says you can create one Email Sequence (with no limit on the number of emails in it) and one basic Visual Automation that can trigger that one sequence.
- Kit's pricing page, on the same day, lists "Automated email sequences" and the "Visual automation builder" as paid-plan features (Creator and Pro), with the free plan column blank.
Check this in your account before you build. If your plan can't run a sequence, you'll need to upgrade or use another platform.

Part A: Create your sign-up form or landing page
- Go to Audience growth, then Landing Pages & Forms.
- Click + New.
- Choose a Landing Page (a whole page Kit hosts for you) or a Form (to put on your own website). Forms come as Inline, Modal, Slide in or Sticky bar.
- Pick a template. For forms, Kit warns: "You won't be able to change your Form's template after choosing it."
- Edit the words: "Anything you can click, you can edit." Paste in your headline, subheadline, bullets and button text from
optin-page.md. - Add a first-name field: click the + under the last field. Kit's landing page help suggests custom fields "for letting subscribers enter information, such as their first name."
- Click Save & Publish. For a form, click Embed to get the code for your website.

Deliver your lead magnet
Kit can send a confirmation email after sign-up and then hand over your freebie:
- Open your form or landing page and click Settings, then the Confirmation Email tab.
- Send confirmation email switches this email on or off. Auto-confirm new subscribers, if unchecked, means people must click the link in that email to confirm (double opt-in), which Kit recommends.
- Under After confirming redirect to, choose Download and click Choose a file to upload your PDF, or choose URL to send people to a page.
- Click Edit Email Contents to change that email's wording.
This confirmation email is separate from your 5 emails. Your first email also contains the lead magnet link, so people get it either way.

Part B: Build the email series (one email a day)
Create the Email Sequence
- Go to Automation, then Email Sequences. (Kit's help pages also call this menu Automate. Look for either.)
- Click + New sequence and pick a template.
- Open the Settings tab. Set Send emails as to your name and address. Under Email Sequence Schedule, leave every day checked so emails go out one a day, weekends included.
- Back on the Content tab, write or paste email 1 (see Part C). Under Send this email, choose As soon as possible. Kit only allows this for the first email.
- Click + Add Email for email 2. Under Send this email, choose After a delay and set 1 day.
- Repeat for every email, in day order, each 1 day after the one before.
- Switch on the Published toggle for every email. Kit says: "the email won't send if it isn't published." After later edits, click Publish changes.
Kit saves your work as you go. To reorder emails, drag them and click Save Order.

Start the sequence when someone signs up
- Go to Automations and click + New automation.
- Choose Start from scratch.
- For the entry point, choose Joins a form and pick your form or landing page.
- Click the + below it, choose Action, and add the action that adds subscribers to your Email Sequence. Pick your sequence.
- Switch the Active toggle at the top right. "Without this, your automation won't function."
Kit notes that "Visual Automations don't work retroactively": only people who sign up after you switch it on will get the emails.
Test it. Sign up on your own page and check that email 1 arrives.

Part C: Paste in each email
| From your download | Where it goes in Kit |
|---|---|
| Subject | The subject line of the sequence email |
| Preview text | Click Edit preview text |
| Body | The email editor |
Kit's own advice for moving emails from another platform is to "copy/paste the contents" into the Email Sequence, adding more emails as needed. If you paste images, Kit suggests downloading them and uploading them to Kit, so they aren't still hosted somewhere else.
- Remove any "NEEDS YOUR REVIEW" note before pasting.
- Replace
{{first_name}}(Part D) and{{LEAD_MAGNET_LINK}}as you go.

Part D: The first-name tag
Replace every {{first_name}} with:
{{ subscriber.first_name }}
You can also insert it from the editor: click the @ symbol in the toolbar and pick the first name.
If someone signs up without a first name, the greeting would come out as "Hi ,". Kit lets you set a fallback word in the body of the email:
{{ subscriber.first_name | strip | default: "there" }}
So your greeting becomes Hi {{ subscriber.first_name | strip | default: "there" }},
One limit: Kit says filters (anything after the | symbol) "are not currently supported in subject lines". Use the fallback in the body only. To check how it looks, use Preview as subscriber.

Part E: Can I import the emails from the CSV file?
No. We found no way in Kit's help pages to import email content from a CSV file. Kit's CSV import is for subscribers. Kit's own migration advice is to copy and paste each email into the sequence, as in Part C.
